Writing Challenge: A Thank You Letter to My Body

Share This Post:

When you look in the mirror, what thoughts start to float around your head? Are you happy with what you see? According to Ipsos, 37% of men and women in the United States feel dissatisfied when they look in the mirror. Poor body image is something I’ve endlessly struggled with, and I know I’m not alone. For this reason, I’m publishing a writing challenge for you, my lovely readers.

Why I’ve Created This Writing Challenge

Until now, I’ve done almost everything to wage war on my body. I’ve hated it for how it looks, mistreating it in a misguided attempt to change it. These actions have never resulted in anything positive and ended up making my self-image even worse.

In short, I’ve been abusing my body. With my growing understanding of body positivity and binge eating disorder, I’ve come to learn that my body is not my enemy but my toxic thoughts. Because of this, I’ve gone looking for ways to inspire other people to come to the same realization.

Hosting a writing challenge seemed like something fun and engaging for my readers. For this challenge, I want you to try and love your body, or at least reach some form of body neutrality. Because journaling is an excellent form of self-care, I knew it would be a great way to get in touch with your true feelings about yourself.

I hope you’re as inspired reading this letter as I was writing it.

My Thank You Letter:

To my body,

I think it’s time that you and I were reacquainted. Our relationship’s been on the rocks for the last 30 years, and I’d like for us to have the chance to start over. I know I’ve put you through a lot of abuse, and for that, you’re forever scarred. I’d like to make it up to you.

Thank you for carrying me down the hill when I injured you. You’ve endured so much because of my reckless decisions and I should know better than to push you too hard. I know I’ve poisoned you and cut you. For this, I am deeply sorry.

Thanks for keeping me alive even when I fight your every effort. Everything you have done has been in my best interests, and I now see and respect that. I appreciate every breath that you take and every morning that you wake up. I know this isn’t something that should be taken for granted.

Lastly, I’m sorry for all the damage I’ve done to you that wasn’t justified. All the purging and restricting of food couldn’t help you become the best that you could be. All the binging couldn’t make you shine as bright as I know you’re absolutely capable of.

Above all, I will do everything in my power to defend you and allow you to thrive. Even if that means protecting you from myself.

I hope one day, I can earn your forgiveness.

Writing Challenge: A Letter of Gratitude to My Body

Writing this letter to my body has given me clarity and helped me reroute the toxic thoughts I have when I look at myself in the mirror. Because it’s been so enlightening, I’m challenging everyone who reads this blog post to write one as well! Seeing my body as someone I’m hurting has given me a new perspective on my actions. At last, I realize I should be working with it to make progress, not against it.

To take part in the challenge:

  • Write your own letter of gratitude to your body. Be as open and honest as you want to be. Include at least 3 things that your body does for you that you appreciate.
  • Link back to this post and comment on it so I can read your amazing thank you letters!
  • I’ll link to your post at the bottom of this post so we can share the inspiration ❤

Taking Steps to Love Your Body

When writing a letter of gratitude to my body, I’ve come to the realization that mistreating it was never the answer. With this in mind, I encourage you to take part in this writing challenge! Even if you don’t end up falling in love with your body, you may find a new respect for it.

I’m so excited to read your letters and hear of any experiences you gained by writing them. I hope to see someone else make friends with their body as well! Or, at the very least, find a bit of clarity. Don’t be afraid to join in!

  1. Hi C.A.! And thank you for your kind words. I use a plugin to get the “heart” like button on my site. I like that people can use it without having a WordPress account.

That quote at the end made me smile! But jokes aside, I think this is a great idea! Your letter is so touching, and I absolutely agree – we need to work WITH our bodies! I’ll think about doing it – thanks for hosting it!

  3. This is such a wonderful idea! It’s so heartbreaking that pretty much everyone can relate to having body issues and at time treating our bodies poorly. But on the flip side, it’s wonderful that we have access to resources like this and the knowledge that other people can understand xx

  4. Oh my word this post was so incredible you are honestly such an inspiration and I truly admire you and your journey! ✨💗 This is such a wonderful idea and has really inspired me to take on a challenge like this – it’s beautiful thank you for sharing!! ❤️❤️

  5. a Life on a Dime

As a woman whose body barely handled pregnancy 26 weeks without complication (twice) I have a hard time thanking my body for lots of things. I regularly feel like it’s failed me. But I’m still here and so are my two beautiful children. Thank you for the reminder to thank my body, even through its so perceived failures/

    1. Yes! There’s definitely a positive in all this. It’s so easy to become consumed with the negatives. I’m glad you and your kids are well 🙂
