The Misconceptions People May Have About This Blog

As of September 7th, this blog, Lose Weight With Ang, will finally be a year old. As great as it is to finally say that, I find myself celebrating the many things that came with the blog instead. My life has changed completely since I started writing.

But sometimes I wonder how some people feel when they see the name of this blog. Often, I see other bloggers and influencers on social media talking about how anti-dieting and body positivity means you shouldn’t want to lose weight. That if you want to lose weight, your thoughts are not your own, and you’ve been misled by diet culture.

So, I was inspired to write this post to set a few things straight. Not because anyone has been unkind to me or made any unfair claims about the site. Rather, because I see how there may be misconceptions about this blog made by anyone passing by. I want to make sure my intentions are clear. Here are a few misbeliefs people may have about my blog.

I’m Only Blogging About Weight Loss

If you’ve been hanging around my blog for a while now, you’re well aware of this one. This site covers much more than simply blogging about weight loss. Naming the blog Lose Weight With Ang was to bring attention to the personal weight loss journey that I decided to include. Part of me does wish I had named it something else, but that’s only because the site changed so much since it was created.

In reality, my blog focuses on everything from fitness to eating disorders to the occasional post about blogging. I try to make sure this site has something helpful for everyone, and I hope my readers feel the same way.

I’m always looking for new blog post ideas to keep the blog from sounding repetitive or unhelpful. So far, I feel as though I’ve done a good job of that. Of course, if any of you lovely readers have any recommendations, I’d be happy to hear them. I’ve taken a couple of requests so far and appreciate them all.

This Blog is Not Body Positive

I once read a post on Instagram about how wanting to lose weight can’t be body positive. Mainly, they said wanting to change yourself at all is disordered thinking. To me, this is untrue. I believe it’s human nature to want to improve, and we can do that while still appreciating what our body does for us. If someone wants to lose weight healthily, that isn’t a problem. Making them feel bad for it is unhelpful.

What’s also unhelpful is people trying to sell products or give shoddy advice to anyone looking to lose weight. That’s why I’m here to help. I’ve struggled with weight loss and eating disorders for so long that I’ve seen and tried everything. I know what works and what doesn’t. I also know what’s the worst for one’s mental and physical health. This is why I don’t promote dieting or quick fixes. Ever.

As I once discussed with Olga’s Wellness in an Instagram interview, I’m using myself as an example for anyone looking to lose weight. I want to prove to everyone that weight loss can be done without dieting or losing your sanity. You can’t change the fact that people want to lose weight, but you can show them they don’t need to harm themselves to do it.

I would never tell someone to lose weight for any reason. That is your choice to make for yourself. However, I know how losing weight has benefitted me. I’m here to help with those decisions and give you the facts to cut through the diet culture nonsense.

This Blog Promotes Dieting and Disordered Eating

Wanting to be a healthy weight and get there in a healthy way is not an eating disorder. I’ve had several eating disorders, so you’ll have to trust me on this. I’m finally learning to eat intuitively, enjoy foods without labeling them as good or bad. I’ve learned to see food not only as nourishment but also as a form of self-care.

For many people recovering from eating disorders, weight gain is often the result. But because I suffered from binge eating disorder, my recovery has included weight loss instead. I’m proud of my progress and see my weight falling gradually as part of my healing.

On this blog, I will never promote disordered eating behaviors like fasting, calorie counting, cutting out carbs, or only eating at certain times. I do none of these things and I know controlling and restricting food does more harm than good. Personally, I never allow anyone to make me feel bad about what I’m eating anymore. I can’t allow any disordered eating thoughts to come creeping back.

If you need a little extra help with thoughts of disordered eating, I have a great recommendation! Befriending Your Body by Ann Saffi Biasetti is a book written to help readers reconnect with their bodies. It graciously teaches you to have compassion for yourself, pay attention to your thoughts, and heal from the inside out.

Befriending Your Body gives you the power to discover who you really are and opens the door to self-improvement. It also offers many simple practices using guided meditation, yoga, and journaling. If you want to learn more about the book, I wrote a complete review of it here.

What to Expect Moving Forward

Hopefully, this post has cleared up any misconceptions you had about this blog. It’s easy for people to judge something just by looking at the surface, I know, so I hope this helps. I’ll continue to write what I can about healthy living using facts from credible sources. Also, I’ll continue blogging about weight loss in a safe and sustainable way.

In the end, I hope that I can make my readers’ lives, and my own, just a little better.

To my fellow bloggers: have your readers ever had any misbeliefs about your blog that you felt the need to clarify? Let me know in the comments!

That’s it for now everyone. If you’ve found some value in this post, please share it to inspire others too! Thanks!

  1. Your posts have a way of addressing the issues in a great, straightforward, unassuming fashion.

I kind of wish I had named my blog something else too!

I get a lot of spam followers.

Do you get them as well?

    1. Thank you! I like your blog’s name. It tells a lot about the blog.

I get a lot of followers who don’t comment, but no one is spamming me. Not yet anyway. I had one spam comment once and I deleted it.

      1. Thank you! 🙂

I should clarify… a few of my followers for a while now, have been marketing and sales people.

That’s what I meant by spam.

Of course, there are people who spam comment, but only on occasion.

  2. I LOVE YOUR BLOG and can vouch for everything you’ve said here! You’re spreading such a positive message and really encouraging so many of us. <3
Misconception – I think a lot of people don't take me seriously as a blogger – cause I write for fun and on fun topics. But it still takes A LOT of effort to keep the blog going.

    1. Thank you so much for the kind words! I love your blog too 💜.

I think a lot of readers who don’t blog may think that. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes with blogging. It’s hard work, but many don’t know that!

  3. I’m not sure what happens, C.A., but I don’t think you can change the domain name without losing all the links to your site. That would be hard to fix, I imagine.

  4. I think this post does a great job of making it clear what your blog is about. It seems like it would be very hard to come up with a weight loss blog name that’s concise yet would immediately make it clear all the things that it is not. But your content very quickly makes it clear what your approach is.

    1. That’s one of the reasons I never bothered to fix the name. I could never think of anything better haha. I’m glad to hear the content already speaks for itself 🙂

  5. Ang, your blog is much deeper than about weight loss. It offers all ages, genders and body styles a view on how to gain more comfort around your health and body in a sustainable way. That is why it is lasting. I was attracted to it, as I like to glean tips that I can incorporate in my routine or use to reinforce what I am already doing.

As for your question, my blog is called Musings of an Old Fart, as a means to attract others, especially younger people. Although some who are older than me have said, you are neither old or a fart, I thank them. Although, it is getting harder to say I am not old.

Keep on doing what you are doing. Your comments reveal you speak to folks. That is excellent. Take care, Keith

    1. Hi Keith! I’m glad you enjoy the blog. I always got a chuckle from your blog name. It opens the doors to people by showing them your sense of humor.

  6. Wow can’t believe so much time has passed?! Your blog is always a highlight in my day, when I finally get time to read blogs!! I get you though my view on things has changed a lot since I started and I’m unsure if my new perspective and tone will be able to fit into the blog. Misconception – I think people don’t take my blog seriously because I talk about so many different things and aren’t too active but it takes a lot to keep it going and think of things that my readers could like 🙈

    1. You’re not the only one who feels that way Tia, I think a lot of readers don’t know how much work goes into running a blog. It’s hard to think of ideas too, especially if you’re trying hard to help your readers. I think your blog is great, I enjoy reading it!

  8. Congratulations on your Blogiversary, Ang. I enjoy reading your posts and have learned so much from your blog since I discovered it. Keep up the good work!❤️

  9. Hi Ang! I can totally see how people could get the wrong impression about a blog and I think it’s great that you have taken the time to clear that right up 🙂 And congarats on your one year milestone 😀

  10. It’s nice when people recognize that you talk about more than one thing. Also, no prob! I follow the blogs I think I would find interesting 😊

  11. Let me give you a genuine feedback about you and your blogs:
I love your work, you are not sharing anything that’s unrealistic or impossible. There are tons of articles online, that share things that are practically not possible to do! Your approach is simple, you are telling things, which are done by you or something that you believe. I relate a lot with your work, cause my blogs are also based on things which I think is doable!! For instance, if there’s any exercise, I will first see if I can do it before telling others to do it.
I am here to learn from you and your work.
