Are you looking to start a new fitness plan but don’t want to fork out the extra cash for a membership? I’m here to tell you that you can get fit without spending a dime. Getting fit is empowering, and so is taking control of your finances. So, today I’m sharing with you the five best ways to get fit for free.

Why Free Fitness is the Way to Go

Getting fit for free is a great way to take care of your mental and physical wellness while also caring for your financial stability. After all, why spend money on something that you can easily access for free? Take that money and put it towards your retirement, or use it to treat yourself when you reach your fitness goals.

Besides, who wants to pay to go to the gym right now? With Covid-19, it’s better to simply work out at home. Then, you don’t have to worry about catching the virus or checking to see if there were any cases at your gym’s location. I’ve had a Covid-19 test, and let me tell you, they’re NOT FUN.

There are only a couple of downsides to free fitness. Even the best YouTube fitness channels and free workout apps still have short ads that you need to watch to access their content. Plus, if you have friends who pay to get fit, you may not be able to work out with them. But you can always convince them to join you instead! They’ll appreciate saving money just like you.

Five Ways to Get Fit for Free

With that being said, free fitness is still your best option. You don’t need to spend a bunch of money to keep yourself motivated. In the end, you’ll be glad you kept that money in your own pockets. Here’s a list of ways to keep fit for free:

At-Home Exercises

Whether you have equipment at home or not, there are a wide variety of ways you can get fit without leaving the house. You can use what equipment you have or stick to bodyweight exercises. If you need some extra weight, use a household item like a jug of detergent, or look online for a more advanced version of the exercise you’re doing.

Keep in mind, you don’t have to work out for a full 30 minutes straight to reap the benefits of exercise. Try doing some squats during commercial breaks or elevated pushups against the counter while waiting for the kettle to heat. Challenging yourself in small spurts will add up throughout the day.

If you’re looking for at-home workout ideas, you’ll find plenty of sites that list exercises you can use. Take the exercises you like and make yourself a personalized routine. Here are a few sites to check out:

Free Workout Apps

With free workout apps available to download on your phone, it’s easier than ever to take your workouts with you. Use them to work out on lunch break or at the park. Some workout apps have both free and paid versions. With free versions, you’ll likely have to put up with an ad once in a while, but it’s worth saving the money.

Workout apps can also allow you to track your progress, so you can see how far you’ve come since starting. The FitOn app will even make you a personalized program depending on the information you give it when you sign up. Here are a few free workout apps you can download on both iOS and Android:

Check Out the Local Library

If you’re searching for free access to workout videos and books, you don’t need to look any further than your local library. Libraries offer much more than just books nowadays, and you’ll find shelves with various workout DVDs to take home and use. Bring home a couple of exercises you’ve never tried before. You might even find your new favorite!

Find the Best YouTube Fitness Channels

If you like free workout videos, YouTube is the perfect place to go! There are so many to choose from, and you can save them in a playlist for later. With a workout playlist, it’ll be easy to keep your motivation strong because you can make a goal to finish the list. Once the list is complete, go ahead and work through it again!

Here are some of the best YouTube fitness channels for you to check out:

Give Yourself a “Fit for Free” Trial

If you’re looking to get access to a fitness program without paying the price, you can always take advantage of free trials! Many online fitness programs offer free trials to their customers to encourage them to try the program risk-free. Hell, you may like them enough to keep them!

Beachbody and P.volve both offer a 14-day free trial for their workout video streaming services. If you don’t want to get charged, cancel at any time during the trial. Here’s a quick review of both:

Beachbody On Demand has a huge selection of workout videos for all levels of fitness. You gain 24/7 access to over 1500 workouts, a progress tracker and nutrition guides, as well as a personal coach to keep you motivated. Also, if you plan on keeping it past the free trial, it’s much less expensive than other at-home workout streaming sites.

P.volve is a fitness program designed to strengthen and sculpt the entire body while reducing pain and risk of injury. Members get access to over 200 on-demand videos, so you can watch and pause videos whenever you like. It’s also inexpensive compared to other workout streaming services.

Getting Fit for Free Is Easy

If you’re looking to save on fitness, there are many great ways to get fit for free. Finding the best YouTube fitness channels, at-home workouts, and taking free trials are all awesome ways to keep yourself in shape. The best part will be watching yourself get fitter while your wallet gets fatter.

While you may or may not be trying to lose weight, keeping fit should always be a priority. Even if you don’t have room for the gym in your budget. Mix in your free fitness with a healthy diet, and you’ll be well on your way to optimizing your physical and mental health.

  1. Libraries are such an underused source of free stuff. My local library has DVDs as well as fitness and other stuff for game consoles.

    1. My library has a lot of resources too. The fitness books and videos are kept together so they’re not hard to find.

  2. Thanx, Ang, for these excellent resources. I recall picking up a hitchhiker once in Newport, RI as he was on his way to the YMCA where he had a paid membership. I asked what he would do there and he replied, “I go to run on the treadmill.” Five miles away from where we were, he could have jogged or walked there and saved the membership fee! 😄
On the other hand, I guess the motive for joining a gym is the guilt one feels when they don’t use the membership. Sometimes it’s hard to get motivated when there is no immediate reward. Your idea of saving the fee and giving oneself a reward is noteworthy!
My bide and I walk usually twice a day in our neighborhood. Since I retired JUST before the pandemic hit, it gave us motivation to exercise since I would not be working on houses any more. We usually put in about two miles per walk, and with a little extra sometimes to friend’s, we get in about five miles/day.
Now, for upper body, I TRY to get motivated to do a set of pushups and sit-ups and some dumbbell lifts, but it is reeeeally hard to get me motivated, so I am haphazard with it. Maybe I should pay for a weight-lifting class? 😁

    1. Haha! I’ve tried paying for different memberships, and the fact that I spent money never gave me enough motivation to regularly go to them. Free fitness is the way to go, especially when you’re getting some fresh air and seeing nature while you’re doing it.

  3. I’ve definitely been doing my strength work at home- so much more convenient. I don’t use an app or take an virtual classes, I just do my own thing with the equipment I have. I’ll look at some of the websites you recommended to get ideas! Thanks.

  4. Love these recommendations. I love Chloe Ting on Youtube – her workouts are so effective.
I really need some motivation to lose weight. I binge ate my way through April-May with all the crazy going around and managed to put on 3kgs! 🙁 PLEASE MOTIVATE ME!

    1. Hey girl, don’t worry about the last couple of months, you’re safe and that’s what matters! Now you can make a plan for the next few months to get back on track 😊
