The Binge Code by Alison Kerr is a book that teaches readers how to stop binging and improve their eating habits. It offers valuable techniques to deal with overeating and make binge cravings disappear. This review has everything you need to decide if it’s the right book for you.

The Binge Code: A Quick Summary

Although The Binge Code was a rather long book, I wouldn’t dare make it any shorter. It’s never boring or repetitive, and all the information is helpful. With each chapter, you learn something new that you can use throughout your binge eating recovery. Before I give my review, here’s an overview of the book.

Getting an Overeating Disorder

The Binge Code begins by fully educating you on binge eating and its causes. The first section of the book explains why people experience binge cravings and why they’re so overpowering. You learn why dieting and restriction cause binging and why binge eating brings on negative feelings such as guilt.

After finishing the first part of the book, you’ll know exactly what you’re up against and why it’s so hard to fight. Knowing the causes of it also helps remove some of the urgency and anxiety when binge urges happen. Having this knowledge, you’re ready to start the process of healing.

The Zen 10 Technique

Ali offers a unique way to put off binge eating when your cravings are the strongest. Because it can take months for binge urges to go away, this practice called “Zen 10” will keep you from binging in the meantime. Zen 10 is a simple but powerful tactic that allows you to make it past the urge and take control of your eating.

The book also gives you easy strategies for preventing binge urges and noticing them sooner. You learn to tolerate binge cravings, so it’s easier to let them pass without acting on them. You can use Zen 10 anytime, anywhere, and as many times as you need.

How to Stop Binging

When writing The Binge Code, it was clear that Ali didn’t want readers to rely on willpower. The methods given in the book attack binge eating from many angles, giving readers the best chance for success. One of my favorite parts of the book is when it goes into avoiding a binge when the craving is overwhelming. You learn how to talk yourself out of binging by straightening out your thoughts.

Ali teaches you about the 7 “binge traps” that keep us locked into a cycle of overeating and food obsession. You’ll learn how to deal with each trap, so you no longer have excuses to binge. After this, Ali introduces you to the “7 keys to binge freedom,” which takes your recovery to the next level. With this book, learning how to stop binging isn’t complicated.

To use the methods laid out in The Binge Code, you don’t need to deal with every emotional issue in your life. It teaches you to remove any fear surrounding food and the need to binge to cope with uncomfortable emotions. This is great for anyone who wants to begin their recovery immediately and not be controlled by food for the rest of their life.

"You are not missing out. You are not depriving yourself. Binge eating is a false friend. It gives you nothing." – Alison Kerr, The Binge Code Click To Tweet

Bio-Balancing

The final part of the book describes what you go through after stopping the binge cycle. Ali calls this “bio-balancing,” which involves learning when to eat and when to stop by listening to our body’s needs. You’ll learn to live life to the fullest by eating guilt-free. The book also provides mindful eating tips.

The “balanced” body will not want to gain weight or crave binge eating anymore. Also, any excess weight will come off slowly, or weight will be gained if you’re too thin. Ali calls this “set point weight,” which is where your body’s the most comfortable. After bio-balancing, you shouldn’t have to fight your body to control your weight.

Aside from teaching readers how to listen to their hunger cues, the book also gives ideas for food prep, meals, and healthy snacks. It goes over proper portion sizes and how to handle situations that get in the way of your meal planning, like holidays.

Lastly, The Binge Code gives you a gentle reminder that what you see in the media does not represent most people. It tells you how to feel emotions properly by accepting negative feelings and moving on. Better emotional intelligence will help anyone through their binge eating recovery.

About the Author, Alison Kerr

Alison Kerr is a best-selling author, businesswoman, and nutritional therapist. She’s the founder and CEO of HealED, a company focused on guiding people through eating disorder recovery. She has written various books on overcoming bulimia and binge eating.

Growing up, Ali suffered from bulimia and found herself losing her life to it. With HealED, she works closely with binge eaters and learns what’s most effective in their journey to wellness. The Binge Code is the result of her personal experience, as well as ten years of helping people overcome binge eating.

What Was Helpful About the Book?

One thing I loved about The Binge Code was that the author was very encouraging. Ali gives you great reasons to give up binging, so you’re motivated to follow the program and stick to it. She shares many of her own experiences and promotes self-forgiveness along the way.

The book also offers a simple, holistic approach, covering all aspects of binge eating, from triggers to recovery. The methods given can be used right away so you can start recovering as soon as possible. Ali is quite honest with readers, explaining that recovery from an overeating disorder is difficult but rewarding.

There’s excellent imagery to help make things clear while you’re reading. This, paired with many examples and statistics, makes The Binge Code understandable and easy to digest. It also has a summary at the end of each chapter, so the reader understands what was covered.

My favorite part is that it encourages you to keep eating, even after binging. Ali never tells you to overcompensate to make up for a binge or do any other disordered eating behavior. She also teaches you to have a healthy relationship with food and never restrict any foods you love. You’ll also never feel guilty over what you choose to eat.

What Was Not Helpful in The Binge Code?

As someone who has dealt with binge eating disorder, I know it isn’t easy to use a hunger scale to know when to stop eating. Readers may find listening to their bodies and using a hunger intensity scale difficult at first. I wish the book offered more techniques to get people started listening to their hunger cues.

Fortunately, the book is understanding of the fact that this won’t be easy. Ali assures you it will take less effort and become a habit as time goes on. Eventually, the hunger scale will always be in the back of your mind, letting you know when to eat.

Who Can Benefit from Reading It?

  • People who want a well-rounded approach to resolve their binging problem.
  • Anyone suffering from any kind of addiction, not only binge eating and bulimia.
  • Somebody who doesn’t want food restrictions.
  • People who want clear instructions for stalling a binge before it happens.
  • Readers who want advice from a compassionate and kind author.
  • Someone who wants many practical techniques to use in recovery.
  • Anyone looking for an in-depth book to learn everything they need about binge eating disorder.
  • Somebody who wants to give up dieting and learn to respect their body.
  • People who are looking for a book that’s easy to understand.
  • Someone who wants to start their recovery as soon as possible.

Would I Recommend The Binge Code?

Out of all the books I’ve read and reviewed so far, The Binge Code was the most thorough and helpful for all readers. Ali is an expert at what she does, and it’s clear she’s done all the research necessary to get ahead of binge eating and bulimia. Even if you’re suffering from another addiction, this book can be useful to you.

Because I know anyone can benefit from this book, I’m happy to recommend it to everyone. It was a longer book than most of the ones I’ve read, but it was worth the extra time because of everything I learned. If you buy the audiobook, you can speed it up a bit to save time anyway!

The Binge Code: Resources

On The Binge Code website, you get access to many resources that pair with the book and ensure your success. These include 5 guided meditations, The Binge Code food journal, a daily checklist, and more. If you purchase the audiobook, it includes the guided meditations.

A coaching program that pairs with the book is also offered. The Binge Code coaches help you use the teachings of the book to tame your overeating disorder. That’s just another way this book will change your life.

  1. Your succinct advice is always well thought out. I may have mentioned this blogger to you before, but if not, you may want to visit Caralyn Collar, who is 14 years in recovery from anorexia. I have referred her a couple of times to your blog as well.

  2. Sounds like a really helpful book!!!
I get what you mean when you say that using a hunger intensity scale can be difficult in the beginning. Especially understanding the difference between emotional and actual hunger.

    1. Absolutely. I still have trouble figuring it out, and sometimes don’t realize I’m hungry until I’m starving 😅

  3. It’s a gorjess life

I’m looking forward to reading this. I stopped binging when I found out I was pregnant for obvious reasons but the urges were still there. Getting better at it everyday since giving birth but it’s always a constant struggle:

    1. It’s definitely a lifetime struggle, but it gets easier as you make it less of a habit. I hope the book is as helpful to you as it was to me!
