A New Post from Ang, the Undercover Blogger

Share This Post:

Have you ever had a secret so personal that you decided not to tell anyone? One so embarrassing, you knew no one could be trusted with it? Well, for me, that secret is having a blog filled with weight loss photos and intimate posts about eating disorders. In an effort to keep my blog under wraps, I’ve chosen to become an undercover blogger.

What is an undercover blogger? Well, let me share my story with you.

The Undercover Blogger

While chatting with Olivia Lucie Blake on one of her blog posts, the idea of me being an undercover blogger came to life. I mentioned that I keep my blog a secret from the people in my life to avoid their negative opinions. I’m surrounded by gossipers and naysayers who don’t mind using vulnerabilities like mine for mindless entertainment.

Having unsupportive people in my life has never been helpful. Growing up, I found myself keeping secrets about my goals and personal projects. It was best to not share with certain people to avoid goal invalidation and discouragement. I’ve always been an overachiever, and many of my family members would love to take a jab at any mistakes I’ve made.

I’m so open about my life in my blog and with people online in general. I feel I should be candid to help my readers find inspiration through my journey. The people who visit my blog are always super supportive, even though we don’t know each other. Only one person I know is aware of my double life, and she’ll always be positive and help me reach my goals.

How am I Keeping Secrets?

I do a few things to keep my blog anonymous, while still being very personal with it. I’ve removed tattoos from my photos. I have my face cut out of full-body progress pictures as well. My last name has been changed in my emails and accounts. I’ve also refrained from mentioning anything more to friends than the fact that I run a website.

Because we have similar interests, I’ve mentioned that I have a site to a few of the guys at work. Sometimes we talk about trying to improve website speed or traffic, but I refuse to tell anyone my site name or mention any specific content. I’ve even flat-out told one of them I won’t reveal the site name.

Cropping the photos a certain way doesn’t stop anyone from finding my blog. But, should one of the jerks at my work find it, they won’t have a pic of me in my underwear with my face or tattoos on it. This gives me a bit of comfort.

Living a Double Life

Since I have this secret part of my life that nobody knows about, I feel a bit of freedom that I never had before. Living this double life, I can be totally me online and not worry about a family member finding it and questioning my beliefs. Not many people know that I’ve dealt with various eating disorders and are sure to treat me differently if they found out.

While I don’t know for sure how the other people in my life will react to my blog, I do know one thing: My coworkers and family members enjoy ripping up everyone who’s not around to defend themselves. I tell myself that I really shouldn’t give a damn if they do or not, but still, I don’t want to give them the fuel to do so!

Will I Remain an Undercover Blogger?

Is it a good idea to keep such a big part of my life a secret? It depends. I get asked what I did on my days off, and can’t be totally honest. I can’t proudly show off my site or ask for help from any of my friends who understand coding. But, knowing that no one knows about it gives me peace of mind. Even if how I feel proves that I’m embarrassed about my body and what I write about.

Maybe one day I’ll be brave enough to stop keeping secrets and show my blog to more than just the online world. Then I can stop being anonymous. Until I do, I’ll remain an undercover blogger.

What about you? Are there certain aspects of your life you don’t want friends and family to know about, but are happy sharing with strangers? Let me know in the comments!

Your idea of losing weight is ideal in your material on the subject matter and an ordeal that is world\wide continuing book material!!!!

  2. Hmm we are yin and yang, as I am open and use my real name in both of my blogs.
I understand your perspective though. I do. I just have come to far to give a flying f*ck what anyone thinks. In the coaching world they call it, people pleasing, and when you figure out you mean more to YOU than they do, you’ll be unapologetic and open. Either way, I am happy to know you and support you. ❤️🦋🌀

  3. I would disagree with the above comment. Knowing about your inner workings is a privilege you can choose to grant, not something that people in your life are entitled to by default.

I’m not hard to find since I started using my full name when I published my first book, but I’ve never told anyone “in real life” the name or URL of my blog. They’re not the audience I’m writing it for.

    1. Yeah, I don’t see any benefit to sharing with the people I know either. It’s my choice, and it doesn’t make me any weaker of a person because I’ve made that choice. Thanks!

RIGHT ON LOVE!!!! Entitlement is the key word here. And people closest to you seem to enbody this word in the negative sense of course. but like you mentioned your not wriring for them.. xoxo

  4. isn’t that a picture of you in the header section holding a banana?

I understand your desire to keep your site private, but admire your willingness to still share your weight loss journey anonymously, since many people can benefit from what you have to say and what you have been through…

    1. Haha yes I’m holding a banana and a slice of pizza. Part of my message to people is you can lose weight without restrictive dieting. I still eat junk food like pizza and can lose weight because I enjoy it in moderation.

Thanks a lot for your support!

      1. you are welcome. It’s a clever photo and I like how it ties in with your message, but I thought you didn’t want anyone to know who you are, that’s why I was confused that your picture was there…

  5. You know what’s funny? I saw you posted again and my heart skipped a beat! Whether or not you choose to keep your blog a secret from your real life family and friends, is entirely up to you. What I’ve found liberating is just owning mine but it does force me to censor a lot of the things I want to talk about on the blog. So do what works best for you, but be very proud of yourself. You’ve got people like me sitting on the other side of the globe, excited to read any new posts you have! ☺️

    1. Omg! That’s so nice to hear. I’m glad you like my posts. I’m happy that I can be totally candid with people online. I feel like hearing my experiences will help other people struggling with similar issues.

  6. A Big Girl in a Big City

I know exactly how you feel and why you decided to not involve your own network in this adventure. I started my current blog the same way because I thought even “friends and family” could be judgmental on social media. It’s odd to realise you get more support from complete strangers.

A few years ago I would have never considered sharing such personal information (like my weight) to people! Now I’ve found it helps a lot to remove the taboo. And I’m only starting to tell some people around me, but only the ones I fully trust. I’ve noticed people who don’t really care about your life don’t ask for your blog address anyway. Win win!

One day you might feel ready to go “public”, but maybe not. It’s all good either way 🙂

    1. I’m glad you’re sharing your story too, and have had success sharing with the people in your life! I think one day I might share my blog with everyone, but for now I’m in a pretty good spot.

  7. If I had unsupportive friends and family I would keep my blogging a secret too. You’re doing the right thing and I don’t think that necessarily comes from embarrassment but from a place of protecting yourself from negativity.

  8. Great post! I think it’s definitely a personal thing, whether you keep your blog secret or not. I guess a lot of factors come into it as to whether you can / will keep it secret. I don’t and never have but then again, I really don’t give a sh** what anyone thinks of me haha! But luckily I’ve had a lot of support for my blog since the start (8 years ago, wow!)

      1. I don’t blame you for keeping it a secret. My family does now about be writing a blog. I never invited them to it because of how honest I am but if they happen to find it and read it. That is on them. Seek and you shall find. But good for you. Your going to help many people. Xoxo

Good for you. My family which just now just consist of my mother and brother. But they are aware of my blog but I neither invited them or gave them the URL.. if they happen to find it on their own searching and read it. That is on them. Seek and you shall find. But I did warn my mom I was going to be very honest early on but never told her where she could find it. So seek and you shall find. You are going to help so many with your story. And that is the important part. Good luck with your journey friend. Xoxo
